Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is due to open takeover talks for the stricken Championship side with American businessman John Textor coming to the table.

The ex-Crystal Palace co-owner is looking to purchase the Owls and he has contacted Chansiri’s representatives in recent days ahead of a meeting with him next week in the UK, reports The Guardian. The current asking price for Sheffield Wednesday is around £100million.

It remains to be seen if Textor values it similarly as the two parties prepare to sit down. Chansiri has held talks with several potential buyers this summer and said in June he had rejected a £40m offer from an unknown American consortium.

Textor, also the owner of French side Lyon, was involved in the UEFA debacle that saw Palace kicked out of the Europa League. He has since sold his share to Woody Johnson but has been keen to quickly re-invest in an English side.

The American is understood to see the Sheffield outfit as an attractive proposition as he seeks to revive a historic club. Textor has consulted the football financier Keith Harris about Wednesday following his history of brokering takeovers at West Ham, Manchester City and Aston Villa.

The shocking state of affairs at Hillsborough meant they failed to pay wages to players and staff on time in March, May and June. Highly-rated manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed this summer and Wednesday began the season with only 15 first-team players after having a transfer embargo lifted.

A host of supporters boycotted Tuesday night’s home game against Leeds in the Carabao Cup in protest against Chansiri. The Owls secured a morale boosting victory as they saw off their Yorkshire rivals on penalties to keep their cup run going.

Sheffield Wednesday have, so far, shown a fighting spirit having been tipped for the drop due to their financial difficulties. They've just one point from their three games thus far, which has them narrowly outside the bottom three.

They only lost their opening game at Leicester due to a late goal after going down to ten men. At the weekend they battled back from 2-0 down to rescue a point at Wrexham. If Textor can secure a deal for the club he would focus initially on investing in the squad with less than a week of the transfer window to run.
