Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli have long been regarded as two of the most consistent cricketers of the modern era intense rivals on the field yet respectful of each other off it. As captains during a golden age of batting, both have been frequently compared for their talent and their ability to shoulder immense expectations. However, in a conversation with Sky Sports, Williamson spoke not only about their cricketing journeys but also shared insights into their personal lives.
The former New Zealand captain praised Virat Kohli’s immense impact on global cricket across all formats, describing him as the “greatest” player of the past 15 years.
“Virat is probably the greatest all-format player we’ve seen in the last 15 years. He had his own challenges in an absolute cricket-obsessed country, and he was at the top of the tree. It’s a great relationship in slightly different ways. We’ve stayed in touch in a lot of ways as well. But, yeah, it was not really a competitive thing. You’re just in the team and you want to compete as a team.” Williamson said
The Kiwi batter also spoke about their off-field bond, which has lasted well beyond matches and trophies. According to Williamson, their connection goes deeper than on-field rivalries, shaped by shared life experiences, personal growth, and the evolving roles they’ve taken on both as cricketers and individuals.
“It was quite funny, just a full circle. That’s the other part. We’re not just playing cricket but you are living lives in a parallel way in a huge percentage. It’s the different things you experience as you get older, so you do connect on similar levels,” said Williamson.
Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket in May this year while Kane Williamson continues to play international cricket in all formats. Williamson ended his leadership role of New Zealand white-ball teams last year yet he maintains his determination to play for his nation in international competitions.
