The Union Cabinet has approved the formation of the Eighth Central Pay Commission. This big decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Lakhs of employees and pensioners will benefit

The recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission will make life easier for about 50 lakh central government employees and 79 lakh pensioners. The government has made it clear that the recommendations of the commission will come into effect from January 1, 2026.

Commission’s work and timeline

This commission will be a temporary body and will submit its recommendations to the government in just 18 months from the date of formation. The commission includes the following stalwarts:

Former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will be the chairperson.

Professor Palak Ghosh of IIM Bengaluru as a member.

The responsibility of Member-Secretary will be handled by Pankaj Jain, Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The commission will focus on these 5 big issues

The Eighth Pay Commission will mainly look into five important things during its tenure. First, the current economic condition of the country and the financial needs of the government. Second, provision of resources for development expenditure and welfare schemes. Third, the financial impact of funded pension schemes. Fourth, the impact of the Commission’s recommendations on the financial condition of the state governments. Fifth, comparison of salary structure and working conditions of government and private sector employees.

History and Expectations of Pay Commission

The Central Pay Commission reviews the salaries, allowances and pensions of employees from time to time. The last Seventh Pay Commission was implemented in 2016, due to which there was a significant increase in the salaries of the employees.

If government sources are to be believed, the recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission are expected to lead to a huge increase in salary. This will also provide huge benefits to defense personnel, employees of various ministries, educational institutions and technical departments.
