New Delhi: Despite suffering crushing defeats in all three matches they have played in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, Oman are dreaming big in the final game of the campaign against Australia. Oman captain Jatinder Singh is upbeat ahead of the team’s farewell match against the 2021 champions, who have also been knocked out of the tournament.

For both teams, it is a match of great relevance, despite either team having no chance of progressing to the Super 8s. While Oman will look to sign off with a famous win, which could revolutionise cricket in the country, the Aussies, wounded from the early exit, will play for pride in the final Group B match in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, on Friday.

Aiming to take advantage of Australia’s dismal run, Singh sounded confident of his team’s chances against the former winners despite their giant stature.

Oman suffered heavy defeats against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Ireland, while Australia have undergone similar struggles in the island nation with shocking losses to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in succession.

The ICC stalwarts Australia missed out on qualification past the group stage for the first time since the 2009 T20 World Cup.

Oman skipper sounds a bold warning to Aussies

Speaking to the reporters on the eve of the match, Singh said that there is no better time to beat Australia, who are on the mat after the shocking elimination.

“One hundred percent this is an opportunity,” said Jatinder in the press conference.

“And our boys are looking forward to it. Because T20 is a game of momentum and the moments, and if you play those moments right, you can do anything on that particular day. Australia is not doing well at the moment… it is the best time to crush them. The boys are really positive. They are looking forward to the match against Australia to make their mark,” Singh added.

This is the second group stage meeting between Australia and Oman in successive T20 World Cup editions. During the 2024 World Cup match in Barbados, Australia were made to work hard by Oman, who restricted the red-hot favourites to a below-par 164-run total.

Boasting a strong bowling attack, Australia restricted Oman to 125 for nine in 20 overs but couldn’t take all the wickets as the underdogs showed good fighting spirit and resistance.

More of that in Pallekele tonight could go a long way in Oman’s dream of registering a famous win.
