New Zealand cricket team has suffered a big blow due to the injury of Ish Sodhi. Ish Sodhi has been ruled out of the entire five-match T20 series between the Kiwis and South Africa. This injury has become a cause of further concern for New Zealand after the defeat in the first match.

Sports News: The South African cricket team is currently on a tour of New Zealand for a five-match T20 series. The first match of the series was played at Mount Maunganui Stadium, in which South Africa national cricket team defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 7 wickets and registered a one-sided victory.

New Zealand has suffered a big setback after the defeat in the first match. The team’s match-winning bowler Ish Sodhi is out of the entire series due to injury. The New Zealand Cricket Board has not yet announced any replacement player in his place.

First T20 match and defeat of Kiwi team

The first match of the series was played at Mount Maunganui Stadium. In this match, South Africa defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets. The Kiwis’ performance in the match was not as per expectations, and the absence of Ish Sodhi due to injury affected the team’s strategy. Sodhi was not available to play in the first match, and Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie took over the spin bowling.

Cause and severity of injury

Ish Sodhi suffered this injury during a training session at Bay Oval on March 14. He suffered a serious injury to his thumb during bowling practice, which was scanned and revealed to be broken. It will take him at least four weeks to recover from this injury, due to which he has been ruled out of the entire T20 series. New Zealand team has not yet announced the replacement of Ish Sodhi.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter said that Ish Sodhi is a very passionate player for New Zealand cricket. He told, “Ish has a lot of experience in the T20 format and we will definitely miss him in the remaining matches of the series. We know that he was eagerly waiting to play in front of the home crowd after the T20 World Cup 2026. In his place, Lockie Ferguson has been included in the team, who can play in the second and third matches.”

Ish Sodhi’s performance in T20 World Cup

Ish Sodhi is one of New Zealand’s most reliable spinners in T20 cricket. He ranks fourth among the players taking the most wickets in Men’s T20I matches. However, he got limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup 2026. He bowled only in two of the three matches and was unable to take wickets in both those matches. Experts believe that his absence could pose strategic challenges for the Kiwis as he is considered a match-winning spinner.

The second T20 match of the series between New Zealand and South Africa will be played on March 17. The Kiwi team will feel the absence of injured Ish Sodhi in this match.
