As the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar expressed confidence in spinner Varun Chakravarthy's abilities. Nayar emphasized that Chakravarthy is a vital 'franchise player' who has consistently performed well throughout the seasons. He suggested that the break following the T20 World Cup might actually benefit Chakravarthy.

During a pre-season press conference in Kolkata, Nayar and player Ajinkya Rahane discussed their upcoming match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 29, marking the start of their quest for a fourth IPL title.

Chakravarthy's T20 World Cup Journey

Varun Chakravarthy had a mixed experience at the T20 World Cup. He emerged as one of the joint-highest wicket-takers, claiming 14 wickets at an average of 20.50. However, his performance fluctuated significantly throughout the tournament. In the group stage, he showcased his skills with nine wickets, but his effectiveness diminished in the Super Eight stage, where he only managed five wickets across five matches. His economy rate also increased dramatically during this period, rising above 10 compared to just over 5 in the earlier rounds.

Nayar's Support for Chakravarthy

During the press conference, Nayar addressed the challenges players face in T20 cricket, noting that lean patches are common. He explained that various factors, including match frequency and pitch conditions, can impact a player's performance. Nayar compared Chakravarthy's situation to that of a batter who occasionally struggles to score runs.

"In T20 cricket, such phases are inevitable," Nayar remarked. "Varun has played extensively over the past year, and sometimes conditions may not favor his bowling style."

Bowling Under Pressure

"It's important to recognize that he often bowls during critical phases of the game, such as the death overs or when established batters are at the crease. Therefore, I wouldn't say there's anything fundamentally wrong with his game," Nayar added.

Post-World Cup Break and Team Dynamics

Nayar highlighted the importance of the ten-day break Chakravarthy received after the World Cup, stating that the team aims to alleviate any pressure on him. He noted, "If Varun doesn't perform, there are others who can step up. We want to ensure he feels supported and not overwhelmed."

"There’s nothing inherently wrong with him. At that stage of the tournament, he may not have been able to execute his plans effectively. We strive to help him reach his peak performance, as we know that will lead to positive outcomes for the team," he concluded.

Chakravarthy's Record with KKR

In the previous IPL season, Chakravarthy was the seventh-highest wicket-taker, securing 17 wickets at an average of 22.52 and an economy rate of 7.66, with his best performance being 3/22.

Overall, in 83 matches for KKR, he has taken 99 wickets at an average of 23.74, including two four-wicket hauls and a best performance of 5/20.
