Four workers died in an explosion in a coal mine in Colombia, central South America. This is the same area where a similar incident took place a week ago, in which nine people lost their lives. The bodies of four miners trapped in the Las Quintas mine in the Cucunuba area have been recovered, Jorge Emilio Rey, the governor of the Cundinamarca region, said in a post on the X platform.
The workers were 500 meters underground during the incident.
Cundinamarca Risk Management Office said regarding the incident, “They are dealing with an emergency.” Along with this, local media reported that, during the incident, the workers were at a depth of about 500 meters (1,650 feet) below the ground. Although the cause of the blast is not yet clear, mine accidents are common in this area of Colombia.
According to local people, these accidents occur due to poor ventilation in illegal or small-scale mines that operate without permits and fail to meet safety standards. Earlier on May 4, there was an explosion in another underground coal mine in the municipality of Sutatusa, also in Cundinamarca. Nine people died in that incident and six were rescued.
