According to reports, Prateek Yadav was suffering from a serious disease named “Pulmonary Embolism”. Even a few days ago, he was admitted to a private hospital in critical condition.

What is Pulmonary Embolism?

Pulmonary embolism is considered a very serious and life-threatening medical condition. In this disease, the blood clot formed in the body gets stuck in the veins of the lungs. Due to this, the blood flow to the lungs stops and the body does not get enough oxygen.

According to doctors, in most cases this blood clot forms in the veins of the legs. This condition is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Later this clot reaches the lungs through the blood and causes blockage there.

Is Pulmonary Embolism fatal?

According to experts, if timely treatment is not received, pulmonary embolism can prove fatal. It has been said in the reports that about one-third of the patients whose disease is not identified on time and is not treated, may die. However, if treatment starts on time, the risk of death reduces significantly.

What will happen if the disease lasts for a long time?

This disease can later lead to a serious condition like “Pulmonary Hypertension”. In this, blood pressure increases significantly in the lungs and right side of the heart. Due to continuous blockage, the heart has to work harder, due to which the heart can become weak.

In some rare cases, small clots persist in the lungs for a long time, which can cause scarring in the arteries there and affect blood flow.

What are the symptoms of this disease?

Symptoms of pulmonary embolism may vary from patient to patient. It depends on how much part of the lungs is affected, how big the clot is and whether the patient already has any heart or lung disease.

  • Among the common symptoms of this disease, sudden shortness of breath is considered to be the most important. The patient may have difficulty in breathing even at rest and the problem may increase upon doing physical activity.

  • Apart from this, you may feel severe pain in the chest, which may feel like a heart attack. Sometimes the pain increases when taking a deep breath, coughing, bending or turning forward.

  • The patient may also feel dizzy or faint. If blood pressure or heart rate suddenly falls, the person may faint.

  • Apart from this, symptoms like bleeding with cough, fast or irregular heartbeat, excessive sweating, fever, pain or swelling in legs, blue or discolored skin can also be seen.

What are the methods of prevention?

  • Experts say that preventing the formation of blood clots in the veins of the legs is the biggest way to prevent pulmonary embolism. For this reason, many measures are taken in hospitals to protect patients from blood clots.

  • Doctors give blood thinners/anticoagulants to at-risk patients. These medicines are also given before and after surgery or to patients suffering from serious diseases like heart attack, stroke and cancer.

  • Apart from this, it is advisable to wear “compression stockings”. These special socks help in maintaining better blood flow in the veins of the legs and prevent blood from clotting.

  • Doctors also advise sleeping with your legs elevated and avoiding sitting in one place for too long. Walking soon after surgery also reduces the risk of blood clot formation.

  • “Pneumatic compression” technique is used in some patients. In this, special types of cuffs are placed on the legs, which create pressure on the veins by filling and releasing air from time to time. This improves blood flow in the legs and the risk of blood clots can be reduced.
