Whose daughter was Goddess Meenakshi?

According to the popular story, there was a king named Malayadhwaja Pandya in Madurai state of South India. His wife's name was Kanchanamala. They did not have any children after a long time of marriage. Seeing this, King Malayadhwaj performed a rigorous yagya to have a child. A girl appeared from the sacrificial fire, who had three breasts. Then a voice from the sky said that this girl is not ordinary and as soon as she sees the man whom she will consider as her husband, her third breast will automatically disappear.

The girl born from fire had eyes like those of a fish, so King Malayadhwaj named her Meenakshi. The king trained that girl like a warrior. Goddess Meenakshi was a very mighty warrior. After Goddess Meenakshi conquered many kingdoms on earth, she also went to heaven and Vaikuntha and won there too.

Third breast disappeared after seeing Lord Shiva

After winning Vaikuntha, when Goddess Meenakshi reached Mount Kailash, on seeing Lord Shiva there, her third breast disappeared and she understood that he was her husband. Lord Shiva knew that Meenakshi herself was the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Later Mahadev came to Madurai in the form of Sundareshwar and married Goddess Meenakshi.

Where is the ancient temple of Goddess Meenakshi?

Although there are many temples of Goddess Meenakshi in South India, but the oldest temple is located in Madurai. Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareshwar are worshiped here.
