Cleaning the washing machine often falls to the bottom of people's cleaning routines, because after all, they're cleaning clothes. But these appliances should also be cleaned, especially washing machines. Washing machines are a hotspot for mould and bad odours, which can prevent them from cleaning laundry properly.

Luckily, Liam Cookson, laundry expert at Hair and Hoover, has shared two areas of the washing machine to clean regularly-the drawer and the rubber seal. The expert said: "During warmer months, washing machines are often used more frequently for items like gym wear, bedding and lighter clothing.

"These can carry more sweat and bacteria, which, combined with moisture inside the machine, can quickly lead to unpleasant odours if regular cleaning isn't maintained."

The washing machine should be deep-cleaned monthly, but you can extend this by doing certain things after each wash.

This includes opening and cleaning the detergent drawer, which is one of the most neglected parts of a washing machine.

The expert said: "The detergent drawer is one of the most overlooked areas, but it's where residue builds up quickly.

"Removing the drawer and rinsing it under warm water, while also cleaning inside the compartment, helps prevent mould and ensures detergent flows properly during each cycle."

It's also important to focus on cleaning the door seal, which can trap water, lint and debris after each wash.

The laundry expert recommended wiping it down regularly and checking for hidden build-up. Not only does this improve hygiene, but it also prevents long-term odours from forming, especially during the summer.

The expert continued: "Simple habits like leaving the door slightly open after a cycle, using the correct amount of detergent and running occasional maintenance washes at a higher temperature can all help your washing machine clean and perform at its best, particularly when usage increases in summer."
