The DVSA has overseen a series of major rule updates, with certain drivers impacted by new changes since Tuesday. The DVSA has introduced major overhauls to UK driving tests, with learner drivers set to feel the impact of a series of tweaks.

The rule changes will come in three stages, with the second update introduced on May 12. Earlier this spring, the DVSA made changes to the number of times learners could make updates to test bookings, reducing the amount from six times to just two.

From May 12, learner drivers are only allowed to book, change or manage their test with driving instructors losing their power to organise assessments. The DVSA has stressed that updating the system would help motorists as it would stop third parties or bots from bulk booking tests to sell them on at inflated prices.

The DVSA has also made clear that learner drivers should only book tests when they feel they are genuinely ready to sit the assessment.

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts explained: "For learner drivers, the message is that preparation matters more than ever. With far fewer opportunities to change a test date or location, learners will need to be confident they are genuinely ready before booking.

"While the rules may initially feel less flexible, experts say they should discourage speculative bookings and last-minute cancellations that have made it harder for test-ready learners to find a slot. In the longer term, this could mean fairer access to tests and improved pass-rate confidence."

The changes will not end there, with a final update set to come into effect in a matter of weeks on June 9. Under the tweaks, learner drivers will be hit with further limits on changing test centre locations.

The new rule will mean learners will be forced to move their driving test to one of their three nearest driving test centres.
