A one off drama about the interrogation of Madeleine McCann's mother Kate by Portuguese police in the aftermath of her daughter's disappearance on May 3 2007 proved a turn off for 5 viewers. Under Suspicion: Kate McCann saw Killing Eve star Laura Bayston play the titular role in the 90-minute production, which aired on Wednesday, May 20. Set three months after the disappearance of 3-year-old Madeleine it showed Kate's cross-examination after she and her husband Gerry, the child's father, were named as suspects. However, although the case continues to incite public curiosity, viewers weren't enamoured of the film.

Taking to X one raged: "Why is this Channel 5 drama #KateMcCann #UnderSuspicion so rubbish so far? It's almost as rubbish as the incompetent initial Portuguese police investigation." Another responded: "Thinking exactly the same and going to turn off!" A third chimed in: "Yep, turning into the usual dross C5 reels out."

A fourth viewer lasted an hour before announcing the were switching off writing: "That's me done, what a crock. Poor little Madeleine."

A fifth found themself becoming irate watching, sharing: "This is making me annoyed all over again about these people."

Meanwhile a sixth seemed to be enjoying it commenting: "Well this is interesting viewing and makes me more suspicious than ever."

Speaking about the show's accuracy, the writer Philip Ralph shared they used real interrogation material to help craft the script.

"The Portuguese Policia Judicaria (PJ) officers who interrogated Kate McCann in 2007 did not audio record their interviews.

"Instead one of their team took detailed notes in Portuguese which were then translated into English for Kate McCann to sign off once the interview was complete.

So the biggest challenge was crafting dialogue that accurately represented the Portuguese police's questions and direction of enquiry whilst also ensuring that Kate's answers were accurate to the record and the facts of the case.

"And then, once that work was done, the dialogue had to be accurately translated back into Portuguese for the actors playing the PJ officers. It was a complex, painstaking process," he admitted.
