Suryakumar Yadav finally talked in public for the first time after he was removed as India’s T20I captain, and honestly, it kinda felt like he just, moved on in a very calm way. The senior batter reacted in a positive manner to the Board of Control for Cricket in India decision, where Shreyas Iyer got appointed as the next captain, for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
That announcement itself came alongside India’s squad selection for two big T20I series. And while a lot of people were naturally thinking okay , so what about Suryakumar—like will there be any reaction about the removal—Mumbai’s batter picked a different route and focused more on wishing his long-time teammate, rather than getting stuck on himself.
Suryakumar Yadav happy for Shreyas Iyer
He was at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, where he captained Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the ongoing Mumbai T20 2026 tournament. Before the match against SoBo Mumbai Falcons, he spoke about Shreyas Iyer being named India’s new T20I captain.
Suryakumar Yadav said:
“Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly 3 back to back T20i captains for India from Mumbai now and it it very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket.”
Those words, kinda showed clear support and also pointed to that familiar bond between Mumbai cricket and the national team setup, like there’s a real connection there.
Mumbai continues to produce India captains
Suryakumar’s observations pointed out something rather interesting regarding the Indian cricket scene in Mumbai. This is because in the last three matches, three successive T20I captains have emerged from the city of Mumbai.
The first was none other than Rohit Sharma, who captained the Indian team to the T20 World Cup victory in 2024. After him, it was Suryakumar Yadav’s turn, as he captained the team in the next period. Now comes Shreyas Iyer’s turn to lead the side.
Thus, this trend reveals quite a bit about the cricketing prowess of Mumbai, as well as how they keep producing leaders for the Indian cricket side.

Poor form hurt Suryakumar’s chances
Despite being seen as one of India’s most experienced T20 players, Suryakumar’s recent performances have failed to meet many people’s expectations.
In the 2026 T20 World Cup, for example, he struggled and did not succeed in making any difference with his bat. In addition, his struggles continued when playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2026. He scored just 270 runs across 13 games at an average of only 20.76. These statistics were much lower than he had achieved before in his career.
As a matter of fact, many people believed that poor run generation was what made the selectors consider changing leadership prior to tours of Ireland and England.
Special reunion at Wankhede Stadium
Before the Mumbai T20 game, Suryakumar shared a special moment with Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer at the Wankhede Stadium.
That reunion got attention because all three have held important leadership roles for Mumbai, and for India as well. Fans were genuinely happy to see them together, shortly after the captaincy update.
So while Suryakumar’s chapter as India’s T20I captain is over for now, his reaction still earned praise. As he keeps playing domestic cricket, he’ll want to get his rhythm back and push for a return.
And for the moment, the spotlight clearly goes to Shreyas Iyer, who starts a new chapter as India’s T20I captain, with the support and goodwill of the man he replaces.
