New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed an unbeaten century, and Rohit Sharma also hit a brilliant fifty as India completed a clean sweep of the three-match ODI series with a dominating 9-wicket win over Afghanistan in the last match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, June 20.
Chasing a 219-run target, the Men in Blue raced to victory in just 28.4 overs, losing one wicket. Jaiswal smashed an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls with the help of 14 boundaries and 3 maximums, while Rohit also scored 79 off 69 deliveries. Jaiswal completed his second ODI century with a maximum and became the first Indian batter to smash two hundreds for India in his first six men’s ODI innings.
Rohit got good starts in the first two matches of the series but failed to convert them into a big score. The former Indian captain made a slow start but soon discovered his form, and Jaiswal also needed a massive knock to keep himself in contention in the already-crowded top-order.
Jaiswal reached to his half-century in 38 balls, and his partner completed the milestone in 47 balls. The duo stitched a 170-run partnership for the first wicket. Mohammed Nabi dismissed Rohit for 79 runs in the 23rd over, but Jaiswal smashed his second ODI ton in just 83 balls, with a six off Nabi. After Rohit’s dismissal, Jaiswal stitched a 54-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer to help India chase down the target in 28.4 overs.
Prasidh Krishna shines with fiferEarlier, pacer Prasidh Krishna picked up a fifer as the visitors bowled out for 218 runs. Opting to bat first, Afghanistan were in all sorts of trouble at 36/4 after 10 overs. Prasidh discovered the perfect length and removed Afghanistan’s top order with a four-wicket burst in his opening spell.
But captain Hashmatullah Shahidi batted well and stitched a 105-run partnership with Azmatullah Omarzai for the fourth wicket. He smashed his maiden ODI hundred in 131 balls, and also forged a 57-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Nabi.
But once Nabi departed, wickets began to fall quickly around Shahidi, but the captain took Afghanistan past the 200-run mark. Apart from Prasidh, Harsh Dubey, Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar also picked up one wicket each. The Men in Blue will next face England in the three-match ODI series, which will begin on July 14.
