India skipper Shreyas Iyer opened up on why young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wasn’t included in the Playing XI for the recent T20I series against Ireland. The 15-year-old, who made it to the India squad for the first time after his exceptional outing in IPL 2026 as the leading run-scorer with the Orange Cap is yet to get his national cap. The expectations were high and many fans predicted Sooryavanshi’s debut in Ireland after a stellar IPL performance.

However, India opted for the tried and tested opening pair and the teenager stayed on the bench for the entire two-match series.

Ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against England India skipper Shreyas Iyer said the team management wanted to back the players who guided them to the T20 World Cup title in 2026.

Shreyas said :

“It's not that only one individual (Vaibhav) has performed others have performed too and it’s important to back them for providing security and confidence to players. Also, players who won us the T20 World Cup 2026 also have an idea about how to approach the format. They have been the main pillars of India's T20I cricket and it is important to back them as well.”

Iyer’s comments suggested that it may be difficult for Sooryavanshi to make it to the India playing XI against England as well.

India pay the price in Ireland as debut wait continues

India pay the price in Ireland as debut wait continues The Indian side’s insistence on backing their experienced players did not pay off, as the team slumped to a shock 0-2 defeat against Ireland. It was a dismal end to their stunning 16-match winning streak in T20I series which started in August 2023 and featured two T20 World Cups and an Asia Cup triumph. The series loss also proved to be a tough beginning for Shreyas Iyer in his new role as the captain of the India T20I side, taking over from Suryakumar Yadav.

Following the Ireland series, India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also had indicated that there is no rush for Sooryavanshi’s debut, irrespective of his brilliant performances.

“He is absolutely ready to play international cricket But we won't rush him.”

Sooryavanshi is still considered one of the brightest young talents for India after his spectacular showing in IPL 2026 with the Rajasthan Royals.

However, the management stressed that proper planning is the key rather than giving a debut to a youngster at an early stage. The Indian side will aim to bounce back from the Ireland debacle in the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. The first T20I will be held at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on July 1, with the game commencing at 10:00 PM IST. Whether Sooryavanshi gets his much-anticipated maiden cap for India will be among the most keenly discussed aspects heading into the England series.
