The West Indies captain suffered a freakish dismissal out of the blue in the first inning of the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka. It happened yesterday, June 6, after Hope completed his century at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Hope was batting brilliantly, having anchored a massive 242-run partnership for the 5th wicket alongside Justin Greaves. He had scored a resolute 112 runs off 243 balls over six hours to rescue the West Indies first innings. The batting duo looked completely unshakeable until a moment of pure accidental bad luck occurred.
Sri Lankan spinner Sonal Dinusha bowled a down-leg delivery. Trusting his padding, Hope lunged forward to safely pad the ball away rather than playing a shot.
In doing so, Hope accidentally lost his footing and dragged his back foot marginally out of his crease. The ball passed him and struck the gloves/pads of Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.
Instead of being cleanly caught or dropping to the turf, the ball deflected directly off Mendis onto the stumps. Because Hope's foot was momentarily outside the crease during the deflection, he was given out stumped.
