On Saturday, the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced that it has sent nine notices to Swiggy Instamart due to complaints regarding the delivery of expired, spoiled, or contaminated food items.

The regulator noted that despite receiving multiple complaints, the company failed to address the food safety issues raised by consumers.

Swiggy Instamart has been instructed to provide an explanation and a compliance report; otherwise, legal proceedings may follow.

These notices were prompted by consumer reports concerning an infant food product that was allegedly found in a severely deteriorated state, indicating contamination and improper handling, according to the FSSAI.

It was reported that even after the product was returned, it was allegedly resupplied to customers.

Additionally, complaints included the delivery of contaminated eggs and milk, as well as damaged packaged food items.

The FSSAI also discovered that Swiggy Instamart was marketing 'Noice Eggs' under a brand name that lacked FSSAI licensing. The company has been warned against marketing any products that do not have a valid license.

The FSSAI license is a unique 14-digit registration number assigned to food businesses to ensure that their products are safe, hygienic, and comply with national quality standards.

In a press release, the regulator mentioned complaints regarding 'Healthify 100% Whey Protein 1kg' and 'Noice Homestyle Madras Mixture with Peanuts,' which were allegedly supplied after their expiration dates. Furthermore, 'Akshayakalpa Organic Eggs' were reportedly sold even after they began to emit a foul odor.

Some complaints indicated that there was no adequate response or corrective action taken despite the issues being escalated, with one complaint noting that only a refund was offered without addressing the food safety concerns.

Consequently, the FSSAI has requested the company to provide a comprehensive explanation, along with supporting documentation, regarding how it plans to address the alleged violations and the circumstances surrounding these incidents.

The FSSAI is also seeking information on the quality assurance measures implemented by the company, as well as details on root-cause analysis and corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
