Great Garfield Sobers Passed Away: The great former West Indies captain Sir Garfield Sobers, who is fondly called Sir Gary Sobers by the world, who left an indelible mark in the pages of cricket history with his magical batting and bowling, is no longer among us. At the age of 89, he breathed his last at his home in Barbados. His son Daniel Sobers has confirmed this very sad news. Sir Garfield Sobers was just 10 days away from completing 90 years of his life. As soon as the news of his demise came, there was a wave of mourning among sports lovers and cricket circles all over the world.
Sir Garfield Sobers is considered the main architect of establishing West Indies cricket firmly on the world map. He was a player who could change the course of the match as soon as he entered the field. His name will always be recorded in golden letters in the history of cricket for a historic feat. In the year 1968, while playing for Nottinghamshire, he created history in first-class cricket by hitting 6 consecutive sixes in 6 balls of one over against Glamorgan. He became the first batsman in the world to do so. In view of his unique contribution to the game, the International Cricket Council i.e. ICC has been honoring the Male Cricketer of the Year with the ‘Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy’ every year since 2004.
Gary Sobers is considered to be the best all-rounder in the history of the game. He played a total of 93 Test matches for West Indies between March 1954 and April 1974. During this period, he scored 8,032 runs at an amazing average of 57.78, which included 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. Along with batting, he also made his opponents sweat with his excellent bowling. Apart from being a left-handed artistic batsman, he was also a left-arm fast-medium pace bowler. He took 235 wickets in his name in Test cricket. Apart from this, he played only one ODI match in his career, in which he took one wicket.
On the death of Sir Garfield Sobers, there is a stream of people paying tribute from all over the world. The Board of Control for Cricket in India, or BCCI, expressed grief by sharing an emotional video on social media. In this video, Sobers is seen talking to Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and other players during the West Indies tour of 2024.
BCCI wrote that the Cricket Board is extremely saddened by the demise of Sir Garfield Sobers. He was a true icon of the game and the greatest all-rounder. His contribution to Caribbean cricket and global sport will always inspire future generations.
Along with this, Nottinghamshire Cricket Club expressed its condolences on social media and wrote that we are deeply saddened by the demise of Sir Garfield Sobers, cricket’s greatest all-rounder and an iconic face of our history.
Cricket West Indies also shared a very emotional post and wrote that a great innings has ended today, Sir Garfield Sobers, you will always be in our hearts. His absence will never be filled in the world of sports.
