Parliament to hold detailed discussion on student protests

Kiren Rijiju stated that the government is not backing down from discussions on student- issues. The government is prepared to present its position on all the topics the opposition wishes to raise in the House. The opposition has been consistently demanding discussion and answers from the government on the recent NEET paper leak and student protests regarding various recruitment exams. Now that the government has agreed to a discussion, this issue may figure prominently in Parliament.

The government proposed a discussion in the BAC meeting.

At the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting, the government expressed its readiness to discuss issues to the student protests. However, the opposition demanded that the House also raise the issue of alleged irregularities in donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. This makes it clear that, in addition to the student protests, the opposition wants to include other issues in Parliament’s proceedings. Consequently, differences remain between the government and the opposition regarding the agenda for discussion.

The Home Minister will reply on behalf of the government.

The government has clarified that the Home Minister will respond in the House during the discussion on the student movement. Rijiju appealed to the opposition to give all parties a chance to present their views instead of creating a ruckus during the debate. The government argues that serious and comprehensive discussion is needed on student- issues. The opposition, meanwhile, is demanding answers from the government on issues such as alleged exam rigging, paper leaks, and police action against protesting students.

There is no discussion on FCRA and Delimitation Bill at present.

The BAC meeting did not present any proposals for discussion on the FCRA amendments and delimitation bills. The government’s current priorities are said to be student protests and reforms to the examination system. Meanwhile, the government is also taking steps to strengthen the legal system to prevent unfair means and paper leaks in examinations.

New bill introduced to stop paper leaks

The government has introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha . Its purpose is to strengthen the existing legal framework to prevent paper leaks and the use of unfair means in public examinations. The government has also appealed to the opposition to engage in a detailed discussion on this bill. This could bring together issues to student protests and examination reforms in Parliament.

Government and opposition face to face on students’ issue

The political conflict between the government and the opposition continues inside and outside Parliament over the student protests. While the opposition is attacking the government over paper leaks, alleged exam irregularities, and crackdowns on students, the government is presenting reforms to the examination system and stricter laws as solutions. Now that the government has agreed to debate, all eyes are on the proceedings in Parliament. It remains to be seen when the debate on the student protests begins and which issues the opposition will highlight.
