Tezzbuzz Desk – The infrastructure sector in India is expected to benefit from huge investments in the next few decades. Along with roads, railways and defence, now the government's focus is also increasing on ports, shipping and maritime infrastructure. A small-cap company amidst this change Knowledge Marine and Engineering Works (KMEW) Has come to the attention of investors. The company is rapidly expanding in the business to construction, operation and maintenance of ships.

Under the government's Rs 80 lakh crore 'Amrit Kaal' infrastructure vision, emphasis is being laid on modernizing the country's coastlines and ports. Those companies which are involved in services like shipbuilding, dredging and port operations can benefit from this. KMEW is strengthening its presence in this area. The specialty of the company is that instead of working only on contract, it is moving towards creating its own complete marine ecosystem. The company has acquired land to develop its shipyard at Saphale near the proposed Wadhawan Port in Maharashtra. Through this, the company is working on a plan to build its own ships in the future, own them and earn money from their operation.

KMEW is said to have an un-executed order book of around Rs 1,400 crore. In the financial year 2026, the company received new orders worth about Rs 1,075 crore. This also includes two big contracts worth about Rs 650 crore received under the 'Green Tug Transition Programme'. The duration of these contracts is said to be 15 years, due to which the company is expected to get stable revenue for a long time. The technical capability of the company also gives it a distinct identity. It has a backhoe dredger named 'River Pearl 47', which is capable of drilling and blasting rocks underwater to a depth of about 30 meters. After proving its capability at JNPA Port, new opportunities may open up for the company at major ports like New Mangalore, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai and Tuticorin.

The company has also performed tremendously in the stock market in the last one year. According to available data, KMEW shares have given returns of about 191 percent in one year. So far this year, the stock has registered a rise of more than 40 percent. At the same time, the stock has risen by almost 250 percent from its 52-week low of around Rs 860 on September 8, 2025. However, on Thursday the stock was trading around Rs 2,702.20, down 1.63 per cent. It also touched a 52-week high of Rs 2,998 on Monday. However, it is important for investors to understand that the past performance of a stock does not guarantee similar returns in the future. Small-cap stocks may also be subject to higher volatility and risks associated with trading. Therefore, independent analysis of the company's financial data, valuation, order book and future plans is necessary before investing. KMEW definitely sees the possibility of benefiting from the increasing investment on port and maritime infrastructure in India. But before considering it a 'hidden gem', it will be important to keep in mind both the risks and potential returns.
