Harry Kane has already spent much of his career planning for what comes after football, but the England captain has now admitted that one of his long-held ambitions has changed while another remains firmly on the table. Kane has given up on the idea of becoming a professional golfer , yet he still believes an NFL kicking career could be realistic, potentially even allowing him to combine the two sports if he eventually plays in MLS.






Kane has finally given up on his dream of becoming a professional golfer


Kane has long been one of football's most prominent golf enthusiasts, regularly playing at some of the leading courses and reportedly holding a 1.9 handicap. He has previously spoken about the possibility of pursuing golf professionally once his football career ends, but the England captain now admits that watching the professionals and actually playing alongside them has changed his perspective.




The subject came up after Kane posted an Instagram video showing himself chipping golf balls from a luxury yacht in the Caribbean during his post-World Cup holiday.




He had previously maintained a "never say never" attitude towards taking up golf full-time, but his latest assessment was considerably less optimistic.




"I toy with that in my head. I watch golf and think, 'I could be there'. Then I go out and play, and I am like, 'No, there's no way'," Kane told The Sun.




"I play off two. I am a member at Wentworth and I shoot ten over."




Kane's handicap and regular rounds have given him a serious interest in the sport, but he knows the gap between being a very good amateur and competing professionally is substantial.




"Then I watch the pros, who played there last week, and 20 under wins it. I think I'll stick to football, to be honest."




Kane has also previously played golf with Donald Trump in Palm Beach, illustrating how seriously he takes the sport away from football, but his latest comments suggest that a professional career in golf is no longer something he expects to pursue.




For now, football remains his priority, with Kane still performing at the highest level for both Bayern Munich and England.






The NFL is the post-football career Kane still believes could work


While Kane has effectively closed the door on professional golf, he remains interested in another sport that has fascinated him for years: American football.




The Bayern Munich striker is a major NFL fan and supporter of the New England Patriots , and his interest has become personal enough that he named his dogs after NFL stars Tom Brady and Russell Wilson.




Kane has previously discussed becoming an NFL kicker after retiring from football, and he believes the transition could be more realistic than moving into professional golf because of the similarities between his current role and the demands of kicking in American football.




"I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique. I would be closer to that more than any other sport," Kane said.










He also has the backing of someone who understands the position. Former Kansas City Chiefs punter and Super Bowl champion Dustin Colquitt said in 2025 that Kane "would do fantastic" as a kicker and offered to train him.




Kane now says he would approach the challenge seriously rather than treating it as a novelty.




"That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously. It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years."




"The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let's put it that way."




He believes he would need significant preparation before attempting to enter the sport professionally, despite the apparent similarities between football striking technique and NFL kicking.




"If I were to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before."










Kane has even identified a potential route that could make the idea easier to explore, with a future spell in MLS potentially allowing him to remain involved in football while training for an NFL opportunity.




"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future, or somewhere like that, it might be a thing where you could connect the two."






Kane is still focused on extending his football career


For all the discussion about what Kane might do after football, retirement is not particularly close to his thoughts at present.




The 33-year-old is once again in outstanding form, having already scored six goals for Bayern Munich this season, following a previous campaign in which he scored 73 goals for club and country.




That extraordinary scoring record has placed him among the leading candidates for the Ballon d'Or , with the award ceremony scheduled for October 26 in London. Kane has admitted that he would love to win the prize, although he believes the timing is not ideal.










He is also approaching another major milestone with England. Kane has 121 caps and will face world champions Spain at Wembley in the first of four Nations League matches over an 11-day period.




If he features in all four fixtures, he will reach 125 England appearances, drawing level with record holder Peter Shilton. Kane could then break Shilton's record as early as England's November fixtures against Croatia or Spain.






Away from international football, Kane has also revealed that he is close to signing a new contract with Bayern Munich, further emphasising that his immediate future remains firmly centred on playing rather than retirement planning.




He knows that his career will eventually end, but Kane does not want to spend the remaining years looking too far ahead.




"But again, it is in the back of my mind because, right now, I am feeling that I want to play for as long as I can here," he said.




"I think sometimes it is easy to get to my age, 33, to start thinking about retirement or the future."




"But I am trying to extract everything I can from the last two, five or ten years."




For now, that means more goals for Bayern and England, while the NFL remains a possibility for later and professional golf has been left behind.
