Amritsar : Police allegedly recovered decomposed bodies of a 70-year-old woman and her 35-year-old son from their locked house in Ram Nagar Colony here on Sunday.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the two may have died around Oct 15.
Police sources suspect a close relative’s role in the crime. However, police are yet to draw any conclusions about the relative’s alleged role in the deaths.
The bodies were recovered after the neighbours alerted the police between 4 to 5 pm, complaining of a foul smell emanating from the house.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP), City-2, Sirivennela , said a police team reached the spot and found the decomposed bodies of Ritu and her son Gaurav .
Gaurav worked as a daily-wage labourer. According to police officials, he had married a woman from another state around two-and-a-half years ago.
The ADCP said that the preliminary investigations indicated that the deaths could have occurred around Oct 15. The condition of the bodies suggests that they had remained inside the house for several days before being discovered, he added.
According to sources, police seized CCTV footage from nearby cameras and are examining it to trace people’s movements around the house. Suspicion against a close relative is part of the preliminary investigation. The relative’s exact role is yet to be established.
The bodies have been sent to the civil hospital for post-mortem examination . Police said the reports would help establish the cause of death, while investigators were examining the CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The ADCP said there would be more clarity about the murders after the post-mortem.
