Mirwaiz raises concern over a six-day eviction notice issued to the Race Course mosque

Srinagar: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed concern over the six-day eviction notice given to the Race Course mosque in Delhi, a gazetted Waqf property since 1977 and a listed heritage site.

"Deeply disturbing that Delhi's historic Race Course Mosque, a gazetted Waqf property since 1977 and a listed heritage site, faces eviction within six days. Equally alarming is the reported failure of the Waqf authorities to defend it. Is this becoming the new normal for Muslim places of worship?" the Mirwaiz said on Tuesday.

He said this was precisely why he strongly opposed the Waqf amendments and increased government control through appointed nominees over Muslim religious endowments.

Gazetted Waqf property

Meanwhile, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday urged Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to intervene immediately amid reports that the Race Course Mosque in New Delhi is facing demolition. In a post on X, Owaisi listed three concerns, stating that the Mosque is a gazetted waqf property but the waqf board has not intervened. He also highlighted there is no Delhi Waqf Board at present.
